So what are your thoughts on games such as Grand Theft Auto VI and other shooting games? GTA went further as to add whores and actual intercourse (to increase HP) in their games, unlike other first person shooter games where you are usually liberating a country from Communists or wiping out aliens.

(Because we want to build/enforce/brain wash nationalism, right kiddies?)

Personally I feel that if the person has a good foundation and was brought up well, violent shooting games will have no affect on their social behaviors. These games have a rating for a reason, so when 13 year olds ask for them, causing their parents to complain about violent video games, the whole system is ignored. Having been brought up in an Asian household where crossing the line can result in more than just verbal punishment, I fail to see how playing a game where I shoot someone in the head can encourage me to buy a weapon and shoot people for fun. It's argued as a way of relieving stress, but for me, these games are the more interesting ones. Humans are by nature competitive and what better way to duke it out than through artificial blood? I wish wars could be settled this way.

Now for GTA, the sex included may be unnecessary... But guess what? It sells. And in this day and age, it's all about the $$$. I personally don't care for the game and found the other ones kind of boring. I prefer games like Halo or stuff like Counter Strike/Wolf Team. I don't dig Tom Clancy games though. (I get it... If they're not Russian Commies, they're Cuban.. Geez... -__-) The accents are always too thick and fake.

So you there, especially parents... What are your thoughts?

well since the last time I had even seen Grand Theft Auto, much less played it... as a girl it didn't hold much for me.. I could see why kids would like it, you get to kill, steal, run over people and god knows what else.. and get a way with it..

Don't care much for the language not really...but as a society I can see why they did it as well..because that is the norm now, so why mess with it..
Like you said sex sells and so does violence, so why mess it if it sells and sells good..

Most of the parents that grip are the ones that don't pay attention to the games their kids buy, or they go off of what their kids say.. so if the kids say it's not bad mom or dad..then mom or dad buy it.. until they see their kids play it and go (O_0)? Then decide to cause problems for their screw up..

I personally don't like them, would not like my kid playing it... but as a parent or even family you have a say in what they do, watch, and say...and to make them understand what is except able and what is not..

I go for more the Final Fantasy games, Kingdom Hearts, Assassin Creed, ect. I was never much on First Shooters or shooting games.. (Unless it was ducks.. hahaha)

Interestingly enough, the way you describe how kids get their parents to buy them these violent games is exactly how my mother bought games for my brothers... For some reason they never read the label that says M FOR MATURE...

I have two younger brothers (one is 1 year younger and the other 5 years) so I am very tomboyish. However, every time my mom (even dad...) catches me playing one of these shooting games, they tend to remind me that I am A GIRL and question why I play them. I don't know, I grew up liking Barbies, but got bored with dressing them, so I'd have them develop a more interesting storyline by interacting with the neighboring teddy bears and GI Joes... I'm proudly tomboyish and much of my internet personality and graphics design sense has a lot of influence stemmed from it. I'm basically RAGE with a woman's touch. XD

Other video games where people dodge the car just in time tend to irk me... GTA's running them over was interesting at first, but like I said, I grew bored with it fast and dropped tanks from the sky for the SWAT Team to shoot through after the first 7 minutes of playing.. (cheat codes)

Now how money has ruled the world touches ETHICS issues, which is why this game is in such controversy. Just because it wins big bucks and is the way society turns doesn't mean it's right... Things change over time, but greed tends to stick around. (1st Amendment - Freedom of Speech... TOO MUCH FREEDOM EXISTS?) I'm not saying we should ban this game. I don't think it's all that bad. We're just kidding ourselves if we think censoring everything from our children will keep them nice. I think gradual teaching and understanding is needed. It worked for me anyway. I like RPG too... Stupid XBox... My brothers' idea...

I work at Walmart and we definitely id for these games...but if the parent is there, they can allow the game or movie to be bought. Same with the Hastings Entertainment I worked for. One of the saddest things I ever saw was a guy renting a mature shooter game for his five year old boy who had horrendous English. I was thinking, this store has books too, I really think you need to reconsider what you are getting your kid. :( I personally have no use for such games, don't find them fun. But I don't think banning them is the answer either. Maturity, accountability, and education are; and are too often lacking.

Wow, I was just talking about this subject yesterday with my family, lol. Conan O'Brian was joking about the game, haha. Ok, the game is rated "M 17+", as we all know stands for Mature age 17 and above. I find 17 to be a controversial age, as it's a borderline between being a minor and an adult. In the court system, you can be tried as either at that age, which is why the age 17 is pressed more with the video game industry (to sell their product to the both the intended age group and the earliest age they can sell their games to an assumed adult for best profit). The thing with video game industries nowadays is that they won't get the same profit from puzzle, strategy, or kiddie games, so they push the envelope on what sells the most, which most of you have stated already: violence, sex, and drugs.

The saddest part of this all is the realism it portrays. If given to the improper age group, it's treated as a learning tool, not a discretionary fantasy game. This is easily abused by the parents who buy their children video games of such content without being of the age specified. This obviously in turn implies that it's alright to do things in real life as in the game. It's been said that such influences have led to the videos of kids doing public beatings and posting them on Myspace or Youtube. In part yes, I agree. In part, no as parental action should take priority. I believe that the video game industry is trying to push their limits to make profit, but putting up the minimal effort of parental advisories and ESRB ratings to protect their asses. Shame, shame. The game should be either toned down or give a way higher age rating than 17. I feel the former of the options would be best. Something of this nature 10-15 years ago would be banned. Period. It happened with the Sega Genesis game Night Trap. I don't see a difference here at all, if not worse. We've gotten too comforatable with violence to allow it into video games that are being viewed/played by underage groups. WTF is a great analogy here. ::shakes head up and down:: Ban the game. Society is too unresponsable.

I for one like games like Halo 3 (who doesn't), Lumines Plus, FF series, and Devil Dice/Bombastic. I'm starting to find puzzle/kiddie games to be more addictive. :p

First of all, During my sleep you wrote this?

I fully agree with Phoenix, if you're ok in the head, and if you're not three to five ( some kids jumped in a well after seeing the teletubies... ) I myself LOVE these games, GTA is boring, you mostly do missions if you wanna finish the game, otherwise you're left with just killing people... My parents don't give a fuck what I play or what my interests are, so I et to play what ever I want! That doom 3 chainsaw massacre, is really pointless from what I saw in that video, you just go around chainsawing people? that's boring! And CS/Wolf Team aren't all THAT violent, not much details, for some reason I like Devil May Cry for PC. though the graphic effects are lame, I like killing all those, what ever they are!

What level are you in Wofl Team?

I'm a Seargant 1st Class and is starting to kick ass... I was recruited into a Pride (clan of some sort) and will be doing a Pride battle with another group soon... THere's only ONE person in the game whom I couldn't Wolf Down so far...

It's like playing with super soakers, paintball, etc... You know you're not really going to shoot someone with a real gun.. I'd much rather see stricter laws for receiving a firearms than banning super soakers and violent video games.

The Comedian Chris Rock said a good joke about how if bullets were to cost $5000 each, there would be no stray bullets, innocent victims, etc... If someone has 15 holes in them, you KNOW they did something bad... XD

I know the New York laws state that you need a permit/license before buying a gun. You take Fish and Gaming courses and pass a test before receiving a permit. I know because at the age of 13 I received it. :P I never inteded to hunt, but really liked going to the range to shoot Clay Pigeons... ^__^

Corporal, due to my lack of interests, The thing that annoyed me was that I lost all the guns after a few days... And I was bored with that, but I do have 1000 kills and about 437 deaths
