In Asian cultures, addressing names is done respectfully, and we usually address people by their surenames/last names and not their first names. (You may know this already.)

Chan, Kun, Chama, etc are endearment sort of words that get latched onto names and is also a sign of the relationship between the two people.

In Naruto, Naruto-kun is said by his peers and teachers. Chan is usually for girls or if you wanna be cutesy with guys... Chama is for super cutesy... Senpai means older classmen as opposed to Kohai, being the younger classmate, etc... SAN and SAMA is signs of respect for more important people or adults. SAMA is for the elite (officials, someone you respect greatly, etc...) while you would address SAN to anyone you didn't know and were being polite to. Like on loudspeakers... ("Last Name-san, please report to room 308," kind of thing.)

Other languages use this as well. Like in Spanish, Juan is the name and I think Juanito is a term for endearment. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

The closest thing to this in English was in the old days when proper English grammar was used and people used to be respectful to one another and toss coats onto puddles for ladies and stuff...

Lady Catherine. Sir Lancelot. Master Buckweed... Etc... :P

Hahahahahahha Buckweed.

They're titles for people in due of respect. =)

kun is someone you like/respect sorta thing.
chan is mostly used for girls and someone younger... I guess..
sampai is teacher. Someone for guidence. =)
san is general respect to everyone who is just plain normal.

Technically everything that phoenix covered. x)

Lady Phoenix.. I do seem to recall you forgot "dono" ..

Or maybe I just made that one up?

And I think English still does it.. Now with weirder terms every day xD

My friend keeps getting called "poo" at the end of his name xD

Meh heh... Ziddeth-poo..

There's a whole list of them, not just "dono" that I missed... I wanted to cover the gist of it not write a book... -__-

"Dono" is used for warriors of respect of some sort...

Lily, I think you've confused Senpai with Sensei... XD Sensei is teacher... Senpai is upperclassman.

Usually if they use KUN for girls, the girl is either tomboyish, outgoing and friendly with the boys or something an older person would call a younger girl... Usually CHAN is for girls, but if you add it to a boy's name, then it's super cutesy or they're being made fun of... :P

For example, some tough guy suddenly getting a -chi at the end of his name by his younger sister would totally embarrass him in front of his crew... Catch the drift? :P

I know I would "buy" it, or at least steal one...

About that last name, here my teacher just yells my name and tells me to get out of her classroom...

But thanks for the explanation...

Dono is a more antiquated term, not used as much in regular conversation, just good to know mostly for historical manga/anime. In a way the suffixes would be like if we always used the Mr. Ms. Miss thing. Instead nobody does, so when you don't know someone's name and try to get their attention you're screwed.-_-

Yeah, if you listen to Japanese conversation, they refer to the person's name instead of using "she" "he" etc... They have words for it I think, but they're so polite in speech that they would say the name instead. Next time you watch subbed anime, listen to the conversations, don't just watch the action...
